2021: #AFA Sustainable Aquaculture
Fish and seafood are a major source of protein for over 3 billion people worldwide. Fish consumption has increased by 122% over the past 30 years. By 2050, we will need to produce half as much food as we do today to feed 10 billion people. However, climate change, rising temperatures, water shortages, and dwindling natural resources are hampering efficient agricultural production.
To meet this challenge, the world is striving to implement the so-called circular economy (GOZ).
Modern aquaculture (fish farming) is part of the idea of a circular economy, creating technologies for breeding fish and seafood that allow for independence from environmental conditions and more economical management of natural resources.
An example of such technology is #RAS – Recirculating Aquaculture System.
More information about this innovative solution can be found in a short animation film prepared under the supervision of specialists from the Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Olsztyn as part of the EIT Food #AnnualFoodAgenda project, which in Poland, in addition to the Institute, is implemented by Maspex and the Food Bank in Olsztyn.
#AnnualFoodAgenda is a communications project funded by EIT Food, the European Institute of Food Innovation and Technology. EIT Food is Europe's leading initiative to drive innovation in the agri-food sector and build a more sustainable, healthy, and trustworthy food system. The EIT Food consortium is comprised of key industry companies, startups, research centers, and universities from across Europe. EIT Food is one of eight Knowledge and Innovation Communities established by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), an independent EU body established in 2008 to stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship across Europe.
